ISLAMABAD (Kashmir Watch): The first ever general elections held Thursday in the geo-physically strategic region of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) for its 33-member legislative assembly are of utmost significance keeping the forthcoming scenario on Kashmir. Almost all major political parties of Pakistan enthusiastically participated in the exercise backed with equal zeal by the people.
The break-up of 33-memer House is this: 24 members elected directly; 9 reserved seats (3 for technocrats and six for females).
Thursday’s polls contestants: 23 from PPP, 20-MQM, 14-PML-N, 14-PML-Q, 6-Jamiat-e Ulema-e Islam, 3-Jamaat-e Islami, 10-Gilgit-Baltistan Democratic Alliance, 4-ANP, 2-PTI and 2-Balawaristan National Front.
Actual elections were held against 23 seats as in the electoral constituency number 19 the polling was postponed due to the death of an MQM candidate.
The total number of registered voters is 7, 14, 967 and district-wise seats allocation is this: district Gilgit 6, district Skardu 6, district Astore: 2, district Diamir: 4, district Ghazar: 3, district Ghanche: 3.
Party-wise position of unofficially successful candidates: PPP 11; PML-N 2; MQM 1; PML-Q 2; ANP JUI 1; IND 4; constituency-19 postponed.
The PPP being majority party will comfortably form the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan bagging also a heavy burden of reforms in the region. The people of Gilgit enjoy a visa-free visit to China.
