:. Hizbul Islam leader gunned down

By Shaf'i'i Mohyaddin Abokar

Mogadishu, Oct 2 (Kashmir Watch): Reports from Beledweyn, the provincial capital of the central Hiran region indicate that unidentified gunmen have on Friday evening shot and killed a prominent Islamist figure belonging to the Hizbul Islam (Islamic Party) opposition group.

According to eye witnesses in the city the slain officer Sheik Aden Abdi Salam was killed by three masked men armed with pistols while he was walking in the city center and they then escaped.

No group has yet claimed the responsibility of this latest targeted assassination which is the first of its kind against a militant leader in the city which has been a spot of armed struggle for the past four months.

The killing of Sheik Aden Abdi Salam comes as on Thursday Hizbul Islam and their one-time ally Al Shabab fought in the southern key port town of Kismayo each wanting to take the city's control.

Beledweyn which is abou 335 kilometers north of the capital Mogadishu is along the main road that links between southern and northren Somali regions and it is currently controlled by the rebel Islamist group of Hizbul Islam.
