:. Rebellion in moderate Hurriyat

SRINAGAR, Nov 21: A storm is brewing within the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as some important constituents of General Council of the amalgam today held a secret meeting to deliberate prevailing situation in view of the internal bickering between the members of the powerful Executive Committee.

"A meeting was held here today to discuss the situation arising out of the discord between the members of the Executive Committee over the dialogue process for resolution of Kashmir issue," an influential member of the General Council, who wished not to be named, told EXCELSIOR.

The Hurriyat leader said the main concern of the general council members was the contradictory public stand taken by some of the members of Executive Committee on the dialogue process.

"We have the Hurriyat constitution to guide us through the dialogue process," he said.

While most of the moderate Hurriyat leaders in the Executive Committee are in favour of entering a dialogue process with the Centre and Pakistan simultaneously, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan have openly voiced their concerns over bilateral talks for resolution of Kashmir issue.

During the marathon meeting on Thursday, the dissenting voices have called for unifying the separatist leadership to bring the hardline faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik on board before starting the dialogue process.

"While the discussions today were fruitful, deliberations on the prevailing situation will continue tomorrow also. We expect to formulate a draft resolution to be put to the Executive Committee before taking any decision on entering into a dialogue process with either India or Pakistan," the Hurriyat general council member said.

He said the Executive Committee cannot take decision for the entire Hurriyat Conference without taking the General Council into confidence.

"This has happened in the past but we will not allow this to happen again. The General Council forms the pillar of strength of the Hurriyat Conference and it has to be taken into confidence before taking any decision either on broader issues like dialogue or internal matters like reorganization, which is long overdue now," he added.

Quiet dialogue gives headache to Hurriyat
Now, juniors want say in decision making

Srinagar, Nov 21: The indecisiveness of Hurriyat (M) regarding several issues, including the dialogue process, has forced its lower cadre to join hands to act as a strong pressure group to streamline a house in disarray.

A secret meeting was held here on Saturday by some of the general council members of Hurriyat (M), besides few others, to deliberate on the ‘indecisiveness' of the executive and senior members regarding the dialogue process and other issues.

“We have met to discuss the problems within the Hurriyat, which is in disarray. The continuing contradictory statements from the senior members have created confusion and hopelessness amongst the masses, and Hurriyat cadres as well.  Hurriyat is fractured,” said a Hurriyat member who also participated in the meeting.

Earlier, Hurriyat executive members had several marathon meetings regarding the dialogue process, which remained inconclusive. Hurriyat will be meeting again on Monday for finalising things.

“Hurriyat is not all about Mirwaiz Umar Farooq or Shabir Ahmed Shah. We are working at the ground level and implementing the policies of Hurriyat executive. We need to be taken into confidence. Hurriyat is representing the sacrifices of masses,” said a member wishing anonymity.

However, the member was quick to add, “We are against or in favour of no lobby in Hurriyat. We just want to see the conglomerate strengthened.”

The meeting lasted for at least five hours and is expected to continue till Sunday.

“People from different regions, including Jammu and those outside the ambit of Hurriyat, are also expected to join the meeting. We just want to give some points in writing to the top leadership for streamlining and strengthening of Hurriyat,” said a member.

The Hurriyat cadres seem to be unhappy with top leadership and simultaneous meetings and get-togethers are not going will with the lower workforce.

The strains in the Hurriyat was evident immediately after Mirwaiz gave a nod to ‘quiet diplomacy’ and senior executive member Shabir Ahmed Shah issued a statement against it.
