ISLAMABAD: The 22-State powerful Arab League Forum would soon engage Iran directly over ‘concerns about its growing influence and its nuclear activities’, a move contrary to the ongoing hectic US efforts to push Tehran to a pariah position among the community of nations.
On March 27, 2010, an Arab League summit being held in Libya on the call of Libyan leader Moammer Gaddafi is likely to mull over an Iran-engagement recommendation from its seasoned Secretary General Mr Amr Musa of Egypt.
Arab leaders are deeply concerned over abhorring prolongation of the Palestine issue in the Middle East souring regional situation with growing Israeli colonization of Jerusalem. Only a few days ago the OIC Secretary General Prof Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu had issued a ‘save Al-Quds before it is too late’ call the constituents of his 57-state organization.
‘The engagement would take the form of a forum for regional cooperation and conflict resolution that would include non-Arab nations Iran and Turkey’, Jordan Times said Wednesday. The inclusion of Turkey indicates Ankara’s growing influence in the Middle East. Ankara maintains diplomatic ties with Israel.
It is clear that West's mechanism in the current standoff with Iran is troublous for Arab leaders ‘who fear that its peace-less denouement could lead to a horrendous military confrontation spilling across their own borders’
